Stretch marks…

October 12, 2010

For many years no princess had vanished…

A number of handsome young people had mysteriously disappeared from totem pole villages,

from berry patches,

and from fishing stations…

Yet no princess had vanished…

But one was going to…

Mouse Woman knew what was going on…

Her big,

busy,

mouse eyes saw everything…

Her busy ears heard everything…

And her busy mind could always put two and two together…

(“And get five,” her neighbours said, shaking their heads over the busiest little busybody in the Place-of-Supernatural-Beings)

in THE Vanishing Princesses by Christie Harris

Yesterday morning,

I woke to sunshine,

and dew on the rails…

After a trip to the bathroom,

and brushing my teeth with vanilla mint Crest,

Whitening Expressions,

I saw a mouse,

next to my bed,

looking a little rough around the edges,

with its tail nibbled half-way off…

The green-eyed cat,

sat on my bed,

without fanfare,

wearing a halo of quiet pride,

and humility…

I said,

Look what you did!!!!

You got your first mouse…

And then I asked him,

Did you do all of this just for me???

He smiled,

like cats do,

with his eyes closed…

And then he blinked,

like cats do,

with his motor running…

And then he did some yoga,

like cats do,

and went back to sleep…

Last night when Little Gem and I were in her single bed,

she asked me if I’d ever want a king size bed…

I said,

Given the right circumstances,

there’s no question…

She said,

I guess they can cost quite a bit…

Like more than one hundred dollars,

depending on the quality…

Then she fell into a deep sleep…

This morning while I was getting lunches ready,

and doing dishes,

I heard the usual question,

So Mama,

what are you going to get up to today???

I said,

I’m going to apply myself to a bunch of jobs,

online…

And then I’m going back to bed,

for a catnap…

Starshine went upstairs just before the school bus arrived,

and called down,

Mama,

He’s waiting for you…

Like a king…

This cat,

who is here with me,

until his food runs out,

seems to know a lot more,

than he’s letting on…

But who am I to say???

I want to stand with you on a mountain...

Royal wood…

On a bright autumn morning,

Windy was curled up beneath her tree…

Even before she opened her eyes,

she could hear her favourite sound…

— in Windy by Robin Mitchell and Judith Steedman

Yesterday afternoon,

when I returned from three hours of flamenco class,

I listened to the messages on my voicemail…

One from an old friend I haven’t seen for at least seven years…

She said she was in my neck of the woods,

watching her son’s soccer game,

and could I come meet her…

And before she pushed the end button on her cell,

she added,

I know someone who knows you…

By the time I received the message,

the game was over…

I’m no longer interested in hearing about friends,

through friends…

It feels like Facebook…

As much as I enjoy exploring,

and filtering through the artifacts of multiple dimensions,

I live for,

what happens on the ground,

of planet Earth…

Starshine called me this morning,

and said,

Mama,

How are you???

I called you two times yesterday…

Where were you???

She sounded worried,

but when she heard my voice,

on the line,

she immediately relaxed,

and was reassured…

I told her,

I was dancing,

just like every Saturday…

And then I was here all along…

I knew you would call when you could…

Starshine has been telling me for weeks,

how excited she is for Thanksgiving,

because of the food,

and being with family…

She’s been a Food Network regular,

since she was a toddler…

When Martha Stewart got put behind bars,

by the old boys club,

for insider trading,

she’d hug the television,

and say,

Don’t worry Martha,

I’ll get you out…

In preparation for a big dinner at Granny’s,

she’s been studying all the back issues,

of Marth Stewart Living,

she’s pulled out of the boxes packed up in the basement…

She asked me to take her out to the Applebarn last weekend,

so she could get tiny pumpkins for centre pieces…

And this morning she got up with Granny,

at 7:30 am.,

to stuff the bird…

She said,

Mama,

I woke up to the smell of sauteing onions…

This is the biggest turkey I’ve ever seen…

It has to cook for eight hours…

And when Granny sewed up the cavity,

it made me thing of an old man’s skin,

all white,

and flabby…

I asked her where on earth she’s seen some old man’s skin…

She said,

Nowhere…

It’s just how I imagine it to be…

Today I have been giving thanks,

for the fact I woke up in a soft bed,

in the company of a cinnamon cat,

with enhanced light perception…

Grateful I’m not spending my days and nights,

in a jail cell with five other men,

with monthly visits from my beloved wife,

because I’ve been speaking out for human rights,

and freedom of speech…

And that my children have been born in the right place,

and time,

to be granted Canadian citizenship,

and passports,

with no questions asked…

Last night was the first game of the Vancouver Canucks 2010-2011 season,

and it seemed that despite efforts to tame collateral damage,

players all over the NHL were getting knocked around,

and knocked out,

in the name of reckless speed,

entertainment,

and power…

I sat,

conflicted,

as I watched hockey,

and knitted a lace wrap,

in the shade of  turquoise haze…

Undoing,

and re-doing,

row 280,

and 281…

What should be a simple exercise by now,

given my age and experience,

is proving to be more complicated,

than I previously thought…

I had to put it aside for awhile,

and put my attention elsewhere,

before I lost my grip…

My cat guest wouldn’t settle last night,

and I had dreams I was searching for missing persons…

Doing all of the things I was being told to do,

feeling like I wasn’t getting any closer,

and that someone else was holding the reins,

on an experiment,

as I held my magnifying glass in one hand,

and notebook in the other…

In one sequence I was shooting rapids on the Thames,

and in another I felt the ghosts of a brothel,

locked under the pavement,

where the building once stood…

Like black miners trapped underground,

awaiting a shaft of light,

release,

and a breath of fresh air…

Before Starshine hung up the phone this morning,

she told me that Granny’s husband took her and Little Gem to see Alpha and Omega…

Then her voice fell into a whisper,

Don’t tell anyone this,

but the last thing Granny said to us,

before we left the house,

is, “No treats…

You just had tacos,

and you can have popcorn when you get home…”

And the first thing George said,

as soon as we got out of the cul-de-sac is,

“So what do you want for a treat???”

We said, “But Granny said, No treats…”

He said, “You can have anything you want,

as long as you don’t say anything…

So what’ll it be???

Popcorn???

A special drink???”

When we got to the theatre we wanted Starburst fruit chews,

but George said that we would smell too much like candy,

and we should get something a little more quiet…

He’s really smart about sneaking,

and so generous…

He bought us a box of Reese’s peanut butter balls,

only took two,

and gave the rest to us…

I told her,

when she could,

in between the white meat,

and all that gravy

to give him two thumbs up,

from me,

for civil disobedience,

and showing up,

without a fight…

I’ve been accused,

in a court of law,

of influencing my children…

And after I unraveled,

from the charge,

and responded with,

What’s a mother to do???

I was forced,

to speak to the question,

What do you know???

It’s sunny today,

and XwayXway is calling me,

to its circumference,

and shell mounds,

for skating,

and working up,

an appetite,

with the same light,

in a different way…

Casting out my sweet line...

In the fall,

the leaves come down and we play in them…

We walk in the leaves and roll in the leaves…

We build playhouses out of the leaves…

Then we pile them up and have a bonfire…

— in A Tree Is Nice, by Janice May Udry

On occasion,

when I’m riding along the seawall,

all the way from Science World,

around XwayXway,

and back home again,

I see a Canuck or two…

A few weeks ago it was Kevin Bieksa,

and last night,

while locking my bike up in front of Urban Fare,

I heard Darcy Hordichuk letting Rick Rypien know,

what he’s going to be up to for the next few days,

game wise…

I almost called out to them,

and said,

Boys, why don’t we all sit down together,

with some milk and cookies,

and have a chat about appropriate play,

and unnecessary fighting…

But then I remembered who I was,

and who they were,

and that we’re all professionals here…

Professionals responsible for our own thoughts,

and actions…

The year I was leaving my school there was a big push,

and a special program,

everyone in the district wanted to get their hands on…

I remember two school counselors attempting to present a quick fix,

at the second to last Professional Development Day of the year…

I knew both of these women…

I had respect for them…

One had worked at my school,

with some of my students,

and the other was the mother of a former classmate of mine,

from when I attended the Incentive School…

I was psyched to hear all about this new game plan,

to help develop school wide language,

around respect,

citizenship,

and community…

In my book,

extra support to implement,

a code of collective conduct,

is always a plus…

But when I heard the prescribed words,

I knew it wouldn’t fly,

because it wasn’t real…

I’ve said it before,

and I’ll say it again,

children can smell a rat’s ass,

from one hundred miles a way,

and in this day and age,

they’re not afraid to use the middle finger,

professionally,

and unequivocally,

by going into their own worlds,

until you give them something worth showing up for…

A year after I’d left the school,

and the district Swat team had come and gone,

with their hit of a red light,

yellow light,

green light,

scripting,

a colleague told me,

You said it wouldn’t work,

and it didn’t…

I asked her why she thought the grand effort had been,

ineffective behaviour support…

And she said,

Because no one on staff believed in it,

and as you said,

this isn’t how normal people talk…

Yesterday morning I was giving a few blood samples,

in the windowseat,

of the LifeLab on East Hastings,

at Dunlevy…

The attending lab assistant wanted to tell me all about her fibroids

And as I flexed,

and opened my fist,

to pump up the volume for the insertion,

of a needle into my arm,

I listened…

A man came out from behind a cubicle curtain,

looked me right in the eye,

and said,

Thank you,

ladies…

After my blood had been let into vials,

labeled,

and properly placed,

with the blood of all the others,

the lab lady,

flicked her BIC,

held it up in the air,

and gave me direct instructions to

Rock on…

In yesterday’s Globe and Mail,

I read something about the present,

that points to the future,

But with each pitch and each shake,

of the Reds batter’s head,

the wistfulness gave way,

and was replaced by just one thought:

He was going to do it…
